Title: K-3 Literacy Data- Balanced Literacy: Spotlight on Guided Reading (Location A @ 9:00)
Presenter: Karla Casteen, K3 Literacy Consultant, NCDPI
Description: This session will focus on how, as an administrator in your school, you support and supervise your teachers in working through the following questions and similar: How should data be used in determining small group reading instruction as an essential element of a Balanced Reading program? How can I support teachers as they differentiate for reading levels of students as well as for the skills they need? What does a reading level really mean?

Title: Discipline & Behavior Management (Location B @ 9:00)
Presenter: Heather Stewart, Professional Development Coordinator, NCDPI
Description: Think back to when you were a teacher in the classroom. Can you think of a time when a student became disruptive and disrespectful? In this session, participants will explore various professional development strategies and content related to discipline and behavior plans to support teachers effective classroom management.

Title: Effective Instructional Leadership (Location C @ 9:00)
Presenter: Dr. Kimberly Simmons, NCEES Consultant, NCDPI
Description: Nothing in the principal’s role is more important for ensuring successful student learning than effective instructional leadership. Monitoring what takes place at the classroom level will increase the likelihood that schools will achieve their goals for student learning. This session focuses on School Executive Standard 2: Instructional Leadership and best practices to ensure a focus on curriculum, instruction and assessment.

Title: AVID Schoolwide (Location A @ 10:10)
Presenter: Maria Johnson, 2017 Southeast Principal of the Year, Onslow County Schools
Description: Participants will learn about the journey to become an AVID National Demonstration Site. Northside High School in Onslow County Schools is the only high school in the state to have been named a demonstration school for AVID. This session will share strategies for implementing the program and for ensuring that AVID methodologies are used school-wide for student success.

Title: Implementation of Revised High School Math Standards (Location B @ 10:10, 11:20)
Presenter: Dr. Jen Curtis, Section Chief K12 Mathematics, NCDPI with UNCG
Description: This session will explore the NC Collaboration for Math Learning in support of the implementation of revised high school math standards, an innovative partnership between NCDPI and UNCG. During the session, principals will receive information about tools currently available for increasing support of math teaching and learning (grades 6-12).

Title: Developing a Dynamic Professional Atmosphere (Location C @ 10:10)
Presenters: Cindi Rigsbee-Regional Education Facilitator, NCDPI
Description: This interactive session is designed to highlight team building strategies that can enhance the climate of the school building. Participants will review retention data while networking to develop practices that retain, support, and grow teacher leaders. Participants will learn how to create avenues of transparent communication and how to reinforce good instructional practices while empowering teacher leaders. Through the culture of collaborative leadership, a core guiding coalition is established, increasing morale and teacher retention.

Title: MTSS: Made to Stick - Implementation within an MTSS Framework (Location A @ 11:20)
Presenters: Angie Cloniger, MTSS Consultant, NCDPI
Description: Why do some instructional initiatives die and others stick? Education is never short on great ideas and initiatives, but students cannot benefit from instructional practices that aren’t implemented. During this session, we will consider and discuss elements of implementation planning that have shown to be essential to scaling up and sustaining evidence-based practices.

Title: Data Dive Using EVAAS (Location C @ 11:20)
Presenter: Paul Marshall, EVAAS Consultant, NCDPI
Description: To provide participants with a deeper understanding of the Educator Value-Added Assessment System (EVAAS) in order to prepare them for making productive data-based decisions in their school or district. Participants will review reports and various analysis tools available through EVAAS.

Description: This panel discussion will focus on demonstrating effective PLCs. You will observe how one school incorporates the use of data to plan for the following: Improving/supporting teacher evaluation; Recruiting, supporting, and retaining teachers; Improving teacher professional development; and Supporting teacher leadership.

Session Description: Addressing the requirements of ESSA, principals will explore strategies for equitably distributing effective teachers across student populations.

The Statewide System of Support is comprised of four service support teams. Within these area teams, cross-agency staff members collaborate to serve the state's eight prosperity zones, by collecting and analyzing data to identify common needs and offer customized support for school improvement by engaging in the following:
  • Analyze data to develop and implement targeted professional learning
  • Identify and develop resources for educator growth and improvement
  • Guide LEAs and Charters with effective resource allocation decisions
  • Assess and modify the quality and alignment of the services provided by the team
