Service Support Team
The Statewide System of Support is comprised of four service support teams. Within these area teams, cross-agency staff members collaborate to serve the state's eight prosperity zones, by collecting and analyzing data to identify common needs and offer customized support for school improvement by engaging in the following:
  • Analyze data to develop and implement targeted professional learning
  • Identify and develop resources for educator growth and improvement
  • Guide LEAs and Charters with effective resource allocation decisions
  • Assess and modify the quality and alignment of the services provided by the team

Opening Session

Instructional Leadership: No Excuses, Just Results!
Presenter: Melody Chalmers, Principal E.E. Smith High School, Cumberland County (K-12 Focus)

During this presentation, I will share leadership practices that I have implemented to increase student achievement and ensure high growth for all students. I have served as principal at an early college high school and a comprehensive high school in which 73% of students are on free or reduced lunch. Creating a school culture that fosters mutual respect and collegiality is essential to meeting and exceeding academic expectations.

Break-out Sessions

NCEES: Better Understanding the NC Educator Evaluation Rubric - Room 1802 (11:00, 1:15)
Presenter: Heather Stewart, Professional Development Coordinator

The teacher evaluation rubric is a multi-purpose tool that can be used to guide reflective questioning and effective coaching practices. In the session, participants will learn how to use the rubric during conferences and practice strategies to improve teacher effectiveness by utilizing language and data collected in the Teacher Evaluation Rubric.

NC Digital Learning Competencies for Administrators - Room 1803 (1:15, 2:20)
Presenters: Dr. Julian Nichols-Wilson, DTL Division NCDPI (K-12 Focus)

Description: Let's take a dive into the NC Digital Learning Competencies for Administrators. These competencies are to be viewed within the context of the current North Carolina Standards for School Executives as extensions in relationship with the ways that digital technologies impact and affect schools. School and district administrators should use these competencies to improve their practice, build capacity in their staff, and drive student learning within their schools. There are 5 Focus Areas and each area carries with it a subset of competencies that help to explain and ‘unpack’ the Focus Area. During this session, administrators will analyze the competencies and share how they are already demonstrating them within their schools and districts.

Coaching Conversations for Improved Practice - BB&T
Presenter: Dr. Kim Simmons

Description: In this time of significant importance for the North Carolina Educator Evaluation System (NCEES), it is critical that administrators provide teachers with coaching feedback to support their growth. This interactive session takes a look at the reasons we avoid difficult conversations with our teachers. Administrators build their skills using the North Carolina Teacher Evaluation Process to provide specific and constructive feedback to teachers. Participants will learn specific techniques for facilitating relevant coaching conversations and follow-up using the three P’s (promote, probe and push) of supporting improvement. A note guide and additional resources will be provided.

Principal Engagement & How It Impacts Professional Identity - Room 1803 (11:00) and Room 1802 (2:20)
Presenters: Martha Anderson and Cindi Rigsbee, Regional Education Facilitators

This session will engage participants in collaborative conversations on the importance of principal engagement and how it defines a teacher's professional identity. Participants will have an understanding of the six factors that determine professional identity and share examples of how these factors can be addressed at the building level to positively impact a teacher's success and increase student achievement.
